This photograph, which I titled “Herman,” was taken in 1976 in Canton Alley. It was in this same Seattle Chinatown alley that I played during my youth. “Herman” was the first photograph that I knew was special and it would lead to a lifelong interest in shooting black and white film. The doorway was located in the early International District Emergency Center.
