The San Francisco Chronicle recently profiled the story of Steve Li, a San Francisco City College student who is currently being held in an Arizona detention center and facing deportation to Peru. His hearing set for Nov. 15 was delayed. On Sept. 15, Immigration Customs and Enforcement raided Steve’s home and arrested his family. Steve was born in Peru and was brought to the United States when he was 12 years-old on a tourist visa. He apparently wasn’t even aware of his immigration situation until the raid — he had always believed he was in the country legally. He’s been detained for over a month and is set for deportation to Peru any day. Li’s friends are desperately trying to bring attention to his situation, and are encouraging people to sign a letter of support to California Senators Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and ICE Director John Morton.
