UW Asian Law Center will screen The Chinese Mayor on Wednesday, August 3, 6:00-8:00 p.m. It is a 2015 documentary about controversial former mayor Geng Yanbo’s effort to transform the heavily polluted, industrial city of Datong into a cultural center and tourist magnet—an effort that involved the forced relocation of half a million people. The film explores the collision of economic development, top-down bureaucracy, corruption, and citizens’ rights in a rapidly changing China. Following the screening, Professor Dongsheng Zang, director of the ALC, will lead a brief Q&A discussion. It is open to the public. The film is in Chinese with English subtitles. The screening will take place in William H. Gates Hall, Room 118.
