On Thursday, July 28, at 7:00 p.m. two professors from the University of Washington Japan Studies program will be at the Elliott Bay Book Company to discuss their recent books on aspects of Japanese and Okinawan society and politics. Andrea Gevurtz Arai, a cultural anthropologist will talk about her book, The Strange Child: Education and the Psychology of Patriotism in Recessionary Japan (Stanford University Press). Davinder Bhowmik, a professor of Japanese at the University of Washington, is on hand with her anthology, Islands of Protest: Japanese Literature from Okinawa (University of Hawai’i Press). This is a lively collection of work, much of it focused on the pervasive presence of U.S. military, presenting voices and work not seen (enough) in this country – and this context.
