The New York Yankees beat the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 to win the World Series. Hideki Matsui was named Most Valuable Player after batting .615 with three home runs and eight RBIs over the series, driving in six runs during the winning game to tie the World Series record for most RBIs in one game. Matsui became the first Japanese-born player to win the World Series MVP trophy. The end of Matsui’s triumphant season also marks him as a free agent. Seattle Mariner’s outfielder, Ichiro Suzuki, has picked up numerous honors himself, but they’ve all been in the regular season.
