Dear Editor:
I would like to respond to the Op-Ed written by Sofia Argon dated October 12, 2018.
I appreciate the lessons Sofia learned campaigning for the Washington State Senate seat representing the 34th Legislative District, but want to set the record straight on a few things. Sofia stated that the 34th is “predominately white”, this is not true. Although West Seattle and Vashon Island have a majority White population, the same is not true of Burien, White Center, North and South Delridge. The implication is that it is hard for a person of color to win.
I would like to point out a person of color did receive the most votes in the Primary Election in August. Joe Nguyen, a second generation Vietnamese American received the most votes in the Primary beating the second place finisher by over six percent in field of 11 candidates.
If Joe wins the election this November he would be the first person of color to hold the seat in the history of the 34th Legislative District and truly represent the diversity that exists in the 34th’s communities. This is something that all APA’s should support and celebrate. — Matt Chan
