Husband and wife owners of King Donuts, Heng Hay and Chea Pol, were assaulted and robbed on the evening of Friday, January 2. Hay and Pol have owned the Rainier Beach business for nearly three decades.

The Seattle Police Department report stated that a man approached Hay and Pol as they were getting into their car at around 7:30 p.m. The man allegedly grabbed Pol’s purse and began punching her repeatedly in the face. The suspect then ran from the scene with the purse in hand. Medics treated Pol’s injuries before she was taken to the hospital for further care.

King 5 News reported that Hay tried to intervene but ended up with a black eye. The Seattle Times reported that Pol was taken first to Highline Medical Center, then to Harborview Medical Center, with a dislocated jaw.

Both Hay and Pol have been released from the hospital and are recovering at home, according to Rainier Valley Post. The Post also reported that in addition to taking Chea’s purse, some cash, an iPad and a blue iPhone, the suspect also got away with a unique diamond brooch pictured here.

Officers said they searched the area for the suspect but were unable to locate him. The suspect is described as a black male in his 20s or 30s, 5’5″ to 5’8″ in height and slim, last seen wearing a black jacket, black pants, and black baseball hat. Officers collected evidence from the scene and robbery detectives are continuing the investigation. Anyone with information about the incident are asked to call the robbery unit at (206) 684-5540.
