You’ve probably heard of the Walk for Rice. You might have even participated in the 2.5-mile trek around Seward Park to raise money for those in need.

Over the years, the Walk for Rice has become a Seattle institution. The annual fundraiser, now in its 26th year, benefits the Asian Counseling and Referral Service (ACRS) Food Bank, one of the most visited food banks in King County, and the only one that specializes in foods that are familiar to the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) diet.

But what you may not know is that there are a number of pop-up events affiliated with the long-running walk that celebrates our unique API Seattle culture while raising much-needed funds to help those struggling to get by.

These events are a great way to maximize your contribution, as they take place during CenturyLink Match Days, meaning you can double your impact.

I’m personally amped up to take part in the third annual Rock4Rice, which features as co-hosts two iconic Seattle artists: Daniel Pak, lead singer of the reggae band Kore Ionz, and Prometheus Brown, rapper with the legendary Blue Scholars. It takes place this Saturday, June 11, at 7:00 p.m.

For music-lovers, the quality of this lineup rivals anything you’ll ever see at a local show in Seattle. Brenda Xu, a touring solo artist based in Seattle, brings her soulful stylings to the bill. Christian Kang brings his brand of folk, and the beatboxer CDQ is always full of surprises.

For my part, I will be performing with my band, Theory of Change, a socially conscious rock band with messages of survival, love, and social justice.

The most exciting part of Rock4Rice has got to be the mash-ups and surprises these talented artists bring to the show. You don’t want to hear about a Prometheus Brown freestyle to CDQ’s beatbox or Theory of Change’s mash-up with Pak and Geo after the fact.

Doors open for Saturday’s show at 7 p.m. The secret Beacon Hill location will be announced when you buy your ticket, which you can do here.

Let’s rock!
