January 12-20 was the National Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Week of Action. The Asian American Justice Center in D.C spoke out on comprehensive immigration reform. Rep. Luis Gutierrez introduced the Comprehensive Immigration Reform for America’s Security and Prosperity Act of 2009 in December. The bill aims to help fix our current immigration system, by providing a path to citizenship for undocumented workers, reuniting families caught in the visa backlog, protecting civil rights and restoring judicial review to address the summary deportations situation. The Executive Director of Seattle’s Asian Counseling Referral Service (ACRS), Diane Narasaki, who is also the King County Asian Pacific Islander Coalition Chair said, “We are engaging with the Reform Immigration FOR American Campaign in a National AAPI Week of Action from January 12-20, 2010, during which time AAPIs will be mobilizing to demand passage of comprehensive immigration reform in 2010. The introduction of CIR ASAP is a hugely important first step.”
