SEATTLE – The International Examiner (IE) board announces that Alexa Strabuk 譚文曠 (she/her), esteemed editor-in-chief, will depart from the organization effective Monday, June 30. Since joining the IE in the winter of 2023, Alexa has led editorial efforts and made significant contributions to the IE’s mission of producing quality community journalism focused on pan-Asian, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander American (ANHPIA) issues in Seattle’s Chinatown International District and the greater Puget Sound region.
During her tenure, Alexa elevated the editorial content and visual identity of the newspaper, ensuring that the publication resonates with readers and the community. Under her leadership, the editorial team of the International Examiner was recognized with Real Change’s 2024 Editorial Excellence Award, a testament to the quality and impact of its journalism.
“I have learned so much about public service and local journalism in this role, and I’m proud of all that the organization has accomplished in the past several years. The IE is currently poised for expansion and growth,” said Strabuk. “All of this wouldn’t be possible without our deep bench of dedicated community members, supporters, and contributors. Thank you.”
Operationally, Alexa added to the organization’s strong financial position by securing substantial donations and grants. She also played a key role in updating the staff handbook and policies. Additionally, she helped initiate the organization’s first-ever strategic planning process, currently in progress, which will lay the groundwork for the newspaper’s future.
“Alexa joined the Examiner at a crucial juncture as we celebrated 50 years of relevant and purpose-driven community journalism. Her insightful vision, editorial perspective, and commitment to operational stability during this pivotal moment in our history have positioned us to make a meaningful impact for the next 50 years,” said SuJ’n Chon, board president.
To help the IE navigate this transition, the board has appointed Vee Hua 華婷婷 (they/them) as interim editor-in-chief. They will oversee editorial operations during this transition period, which is expected to last through the fall. Prior to this appointment, Vee served as executive director of Northwest Film Forum, interim managing director at South Seattle Emerald, and remains the founding editor-in-chief of REDEFINE, a Seattle-based magazine focused on long-form arts journalism.
