The landmark bookstore in Pioneer Square will be moving to a new location on Capitol Hill this spring. The Elliot Bay Book Company, which has called Pioneer Square home for 36 years, drives traffic to the recently fledgling business district and many nearby business owners hoped the famous Seattle landmark would continue operations in their neighborhood. After many weeks of speculation about the future of the Elliott Bay Book Company, the owner, Peter Aaron, confirmed the move, to a building built in 1918 on 10th Avenue between Pike and Pine. After two years of exploring “and evaluating possibilities in an attempt to determine what would be best—and necessary—to ensure the long-term health and vitality of the store,” said Aaron. “I am convinced that this upcoming relocation will afford us the best opportunity to remain, and further develop as a thriving enterprise.” The new space will incorporate a café and a room dedicated to author appearances. It has a fir floor, a high wood ceilings, skylights, and parking below street level. But, despite the charming features of the new space, Aaron said, “It will be sad for us all to leave a building—and a neighborhood—that have been our home for all these years.” He adds, “I’m inexpressibly grateful for the ongoing support—and most especially for the outpouring of concern and commitment we’ve received in recent months.”
