After the resignation of Councilmember Tammy Morales (District 2), effective January 6, 2025, the Seattle City Council will appoint someone to serve in the role representing District 2, which encompasses the Chinatown International District (CID) and Southeast Seattle.
According to the Seattle City Charter, the Council has 20 calendar days to fill a vacant position. This 20-day period will begin Jan.7, 2025, and ends on Jan. 27.
From the date of the appointment, the newly appointed councilmember will serve until the 2025 General Election results are certified by King County Elections and the newly elected councilmember representing District 2 takes the oath of office.
The application period opened January 2, and closes January 9 at 5 p.m.
The City Council will schedule a full meeting for Monday, January 27 to vote on applicants. A candidate who receives a simple majority of five votes will be appointed.
The City Council anticipates holding a public forum around the appointment on or about January 21, 2025.
Applications must include a resume, cover letter, and completed financial interest statement form. According to state law and the City Charter, applicants must be a U.S. citizen, a qualified elector of the State of Washington, able to read and write in English, and an active registered voter of the City of Seattle at least 120 days prior to and including the date of the filing the declaration of candidacy.
